Mission statement

Star Wars: an epic film franchise that first began with "A New Hope" in 1977, although did it really begin then? Episode 1 - "A Phantom Menace" - was released over 20 years later as the batch of CGI prequels renewed interest in the Star Wars series, and there may even be more films to come. Star Wars is a hugely successful franchise, and has clearly captured the collective imagination. The archetypes and universal characters of the Star Wars world capture something deep in all of us. The philosophy of the Star Wars films is also very interesting, with the Jedi and the Sith representing polarities of experience. The Jedi philosophy is very related to Zen, and The Force is a direct reference to Zen and other eastern philosophies.

The premise of this blog is to showcase the many new innovations, inventions, artefacts and ideas that are inspired by the pop-culture phenomenon known as "Star Wars." It is amazing how many Star Wars-inspired things constantly pop up, and it doesn't seem like people can get enough. From Star Wars tattoos to Storm Trooper helmets and Darth Vaders made out of Lego, fans always find new ways to show their adoration. I for one am determined to get to the bottom of why our culture is so persistently fascinated by these films and the mythology surrounding them. This blog will explore and document the ongoing cultural fascination of the pop phenomenon known as "Star Wars".

A New Hope facebook style

Following on from the recent trend of rewriting movies/books/events as facebook threads, here is A New Hope retold in facebook terms. The narrative of the film is presented as a series of messages and comments from the characters, complete with pwning and loling. I found it quite amusing and you probably will too, unless you're a hardcore fan and see it as very disrespectful. Although, I think most fans will love it because it adds another dimension to the Star Wars universe. One of my favourite lines/comments is when Ben Kenobi is fighting Darth Vader:
Luke Skywalker: Uh, not leaving without you....
Ben Kenobi: It's cool, I'm dead.

Halloween Death Star

This Star-Wars themed creation needs no introduction. Some fan decided to celebrate Halloween, and here is the result. I for one do not grasp the significance of the death star destroying a pumpkin, but I will ponder it some more. What if Star Wars was all about pumpkins? Perhaps the empire was trying to suppress the pumpkin rebellion, and Luke Pumpkinwalker and Pumpkin Leah were responsible for reviving the popularity of pumpkins. The empire was full of pumpkin-hating fascists! Oh how the world could've been different if George Lucas had ditched the space-fantasy idea in favour of good ol' pumpkin fantasy. We would enjoy movies such as The Phantom Pumpkin, A New Pumpkin, and Return of the Pumpkin. The Force would take on a different meaning with Yoda giving his words of wisdom about the pumpkin reality and the eternal space-time of the pumpkin. I only hope that a Hollywood big-wig is reading this, and drafts a script for Pumpkin Wars. But for now, observe some anti-pumpkin propaganda courtesy of the empire.

Boba Fett invoice

This invoice is from Boba Fett to Jabba the Hutt for services rendered in the capture and delivery of Hans Solo. A pretty straightforward financial document, there are five fees associated with the job adding up to a total amount of 7250,000. I'm not sure of the currency, but I'm sure it's authentic Star Wars money.
